I hate to say it but.... I'm proud of being American.
Sure, my country's having problems right now and the government isn't making themselves look good, but I'm enjoying my civil liberties.

I like being American, just not living in America.
I live in Chicago, for those who care.

I'd like a cultural history more than just a couple centuries old. Unless Native American there is no real cultural history to the U.S.
The most fascinating things about other cultures can be derived from their longer histories.
Modern culture sucks by comparison imo. Kind of boring imo. The advances in technology are Ok, but not the culture which kind of has no substance to it.
I'd not mind being from the U.S. if there were something more interesting about it, like how Egypt had the pharohs and China had their interesting dynasties. Or an empire like the Aztecs, Romans, or other conquering civilization.
Maybe there is a romanticism to stuff that is so unlike what we have today.

So are you saying that the *ahem* American history is boring and uninteresting? You know, living in an achipeleago (my spelling is u) with only 50000 peepz in them (the Faroe Islands if you ask), has gotten me interested in, well, the US culture. Just for its crazyness alone. Well, it's more interesting than Paul Watson harrasing fish companies, and overly religious politicians around here. And if you ask my opinion on killing pilot whales (aka grind), I'm kind of indifferent with it. Though Whale Wars: Viking Shores is quite possibly the worst show that I have ever seen. Sea Shepard are among the stupidest people to walk around here, implying that we go on ferrys to look for whales... And lying about our culture in general. Perhaps also the overdramatization takes a role in the ignorance. Though it's fun to look at places where you've been, being filmed on camera, that's for sure. OT: Our modern culture is boring as well, FYI (at least here. Though the older, is honestly much more interesting. In the Faroes, if you misunderstood.)

Well, the old quote "The grass is always greener on the otherside." comes to my mind here.
I live here and have complaints about it, you live elsewhere and have complaints about where you live.
The U.S. is not so glamourous as many would be fooled into believing. There's people here who aren't very well off at all. There are religious fanatics here too. The U.S. spends too much time meddling in other counties' business its become blind to our own needs.
Not to say that similar problems don't plauge other countries as well.
I guess I myself want something to be proud of, something pure and untainted.

Perhaps I was one of the people who was fooled into thinking of that, but the metaphor also works on the Faroes. I mean, I recall that National Geographic called it the most beautiful holiday, or something like that, when it's really only the mountains that are 'beautiful'. It gets old, after living here for a few years. As to being proud, wouldn't there be something interesting there, considering how big the US is? I mean, I'm proud of our very talented singers (there are quite a few around here; unfortunatly, they don't make very good music...), and a swimmer who is going to the OL (and I greeted him today actually!).

I despise celebrities. Making money they don't deserve, there are people who have to go without food or shelter while they have un-needed excess.
I'd like this coutry more if there would be none homeless and none without food to eat.
Singing isn't of real value when think of it. Entertainment is enjoyable, but not essential. There are people who have to work them selves to death in boring unglamourous jobs who need the money as much if not more than the singers do.
I know I'm stupid, but, one day I hope there can be a place where I can feel proud.

Well, the singers that I admire, is mostly their vocal job, not their personalities (and the audience here is so small anyways, so they kind of have two jobs, to feet the, selves and etc.) I do understand what you are talking about though, but music is kind of my passion (playing cornet myself, that is), and even then, the only record label on here, Tutl rec., do donate their money to both Red and Blue Cross. Or at least I've been told so. Of course, when you say simgers, it looks like you are talking about the afromented 'superstars'. Well, there are people out there doing it for artistic purpouses, such as M.I.A. (She has a recurring theme of war in her songs, more or less, because she lived in Sri Lanka, where a civil war was going on, her school was bomed, and her father was a resistance activist). And no, you aren't stupid. I find you to be one of the most clever and philosopfhical (my spelling is u) persons that I've ever met. I also kind of admire you, and not being afraid to talk about anything. In fact, I'm really enjoying this discussion, if you could call it that.

I just want something more. My reasoning isn't completely pure, I want wealth and luxuries for myself that I can't have even ridiculous things like a realistic mermaid costume (even better than Hollywood quality, almost being really made into a mermaid if could), but I do think why should I have such things if others can't have what they'd want to. Like share the wealth.
In some ways, because of the modern culture, the U.S. stands for many things I don't.
Thanky you. I feel stupid for being so odd.

I feel out of place even here.
You know, there really isn't a culture for me, and especially none I can truly be proud of now that I think of it. Any modern culture is boring, but all even the old cultures had their evil things in them.
I guess having a richer history isn't a great reason to be envious of another culture, considering where many now stand.

Well, then we have to cause a commotion ourselves, to satisfy our selfish needs. Or perhaps reseach and perhaps find something interesting (or just go to Wikileaks) And, honestly, I feel like that too. (About the oddness thing) Sometimes when I post, I feel like I am ignored, and that has happened quite often. Of course, I'm not expecting a reply every time I post, but, as I said before, it happens quite often. Whatever. (BTW I'm going to bed now. So don't expect a reply anytime soon)

About the "America doesn't have a rich history"-thing, it does. A country's history goes back a lot further than when the actual current country was formed, and it ALWAYS overlaps with that of other countries. For example, Dutch history basically starts before even the Roman empire was formed (although the early bits are a bit blurry). America's history overlaps with that of England, Spain, the Netherlands and whatnot, as well as the (long, LONG term) native Americans, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to look at those too. Also, about the "modern culture is boring"-thing, I believe that has two reasons: - It's too recent. We're still to familiar with it too truly be able to appreciate it, and we can't see the full picture yet. (As in talking about Polish-Teutonic war of the 16th century is a lot easier than talking about "war on terrorism" because it's already finished.) If you'd hop in a time machine and travel back 500 years in time, you won't find anyone saying "Fuck yeah, this will be the most awesome time in recorded history!", people will still say the world was a better place in "the good old days".
- Nowadays, culture doesn't know borders. 50 years ago, there was still an obvious difference between American and European culture, and even between the European countries themselves. Now however, due to things like internet and other communication media, it's become a lot easier to see what's going on elsewhere, making the differences between each culture smaller and smaller. They're still there, there's just a lot more overlap.
Anyway, back to the original question: Am I proud of being a Dutchman? Well, I can't say I hate it, I'm not exactly proud either. The government tends to be pants-on-head retarded (I blame socialism), the first thing when a disaster happens is that people don't look for survivors, but for someone to blame (Wait, what?), and everyone's just too damn rushed. As for what I would be proud of: Dutch cabaret (Fuck your American stand-up comedy!) and the cuisine (we don't have a soddin' "haute cuisine", we aren't that pretentious). Also, as a representative of Dutch culture, I'd like to formally apologize for reality television and the Philips CD-I. We're sorry.
