I like the ending. I just wish that they made a freaking sequel to explain how Sonic and company are going to fix the issue at hand. One major issue I had: they completely shatter the fourth wall, ingratiating the developers in the process. Apparently, leaving a cliffhanger at the end doesn't guarantee you a sequel True. Just look at SatAM. I don't think we'll ever see a sequel, given the current status of Bioware.

I played Sonic 2 for a day, then never touched it again due to its shitty level design. The game freaking plays itself. And those special stages... GAH! It baffles me that people like it so much.

I thought you hated it for the fanbase... but those you just listed are actually legitimate reasons to dislike a game, so good on you. My most hated of the 2D Sonics is the very first one. There's just nothing really special about it and many of the levels are boring to me.

I have to disagree, I thought it was well designed and had a good challenge to it, I really don't know what you're talking about when you say it plays itself.

I have to disagree, I thought it was well designed and had a good challenge to it, I really don't know what you're talking about when you say it plays itself. Out of the three Genesis games, Sonic 2 has the most amount of segkents where you're just holding down right(Chemical Plant FTW) and just watching Sonic zip by. At least in the 3D games there are obstacles in your way during high speed segments. Compared to 1 and 3, Sonic 2 is laughably easy. Now let's take a look at each individual stage: -Emerald Hill is just a ripoff of Green Hill. There is nothing unique about it and has no soul of its own. -Chemical Plant is your typical water level. It's also home to one of the most iconic speed segments in Sonic history. I personally can't stand that part of the level. The boss is terrible as well. -Lost Ruin(or whatever it's called) is ANOTHER water level. -Hilltop Zone is a bland level. It just doesn't look all that interesting, and it has an incredibly easy boss, even for 2D Sonic standards. -Casino Night Zone is probably the worst casino level in all of Sonic. It's not bad, it just isn't very memorable other than the slot machine. It also has an annoying boss. -I never got to Mystic Cave, but at the same time I don't want to. If you have enough rings, the inescapable spike trap can leave you in an endless loop of not dying. Not to mention this is much easier to do than in the Silver boss fight. -Metropolis Zone, while it has a catchy theme, it also has incredibly cheap enemy placement. -The Death Egg Robo is the only boss in the entire game in which you need Tails, but he isn't there to help you. Speaking of Tails, he is absolutely USELESS in this game. He can only be controlled by Player 2, but the camera doesn't follow him, making it kind of pointless. He's invincible, but again, the only time you would need his help is with the final boss, but he isn't there to support you. Also, HE CANT FLY! Why didn't they just wait until S3&K to introduce Tails? Why introduce him in a game in which he has no point whatsoever?

Sonic 2 doesn't have shitty level design. it has level design that doesn't fit your tastes in a Sonic game. Big difference.

Most paths would eventually lead up to a really hard to avoid Slicer

Sonic 2 is, I feel, the worst of the three Genesis games but still damn good. Its issue is lack of fluency, and it also has little variety in gameplay styles(aside from the debut of Casino Night), while for instance in Sonic 1 you'd find moments where you have to slow down and use slow, careful platforming like in Marble Hill or Labirynth Zone, and I think those zones have been done with good taste. Sonic 3 has a similar approach, which is even more pronounced with the gameplay mechanics of Tails and Knuckles and the FUCKHUGE levels. And another thing, Sonic Adventure I feel continues this tradition with gameplay styles which you can conveniently place on six different characters. Even Big's stages feel like they have some sort of purpose in the game because Big is such a perfect foil to Sonic: He's so fat and slow and compared to Sonic doesn't seek to save the world which I think is a healthy contrast in the storyline. It's also good he only had three levels, cuz if it were any more, it would've been a problem. Big was meant to be a novelty.
Sonic Adventure 2 though, suffers from either inconvenient level design or inconvenient controls, or some combination of both. The ways they try to capitalize on the Tails and Knuckles stages also lacks the invention they had in SA1, plus they are very numerous, long, indulgent, and uncreative, compared to the more controlled pace and level count in SA1. This is why I like rating SA1 high and SA2 low.
My three fav Sonic games are S3&K, SA1, and... Secret Rings, surprisingly. It's because I think Secret Rings works so damn well as a Sonic concept, and it's something very refreshing to see. It feels like a step in a natural direction and even the controls are decently tight and responsive and offer for many inventive ways you can play the game, and is not just merely a rail shooter. This only ever becomes apparent when you try to complete all the missions, instead of just plowing through the story mode. I've had more fun with the sidequests and upgrading my character specs in many different ways.

Sonic 2 has almost EVERYTHING that fits my tastes in a Sonic game(the exception being likeable characters). Everything is just done poorly in my opinion. I get it. I was a prick. I apologize.
