For those of you who have been on the forum over the last few months, you probably remember the Unpopular Gaming Opinions thread being locked. There were multiple cases of people being way too confrontational and starting flame wars regarding everyone's opinions and it just got way too out of hand. Well, we've seen more cases of fights being started in any other places regarding Unpopular Opinions, and the mods and admins have come to a decision.
Any threads dedicated to discussing "unpopular opinions" are banned and will be locked.
If this decision seems a bit sudden to you, we understand. Thing is, threads regarding unpopular opinions seem to always draw out the worst in people, and any kind of debate that happens in those threads tends to devolve into personal attacks and disorderly conduct that wouldn't happen in other places on the site. We don't want to have to deal with too many flame wars, and we know that people behave much more civilly in other threads.
That doesn't mean that you can't still post your opinions regarding a certain series or media. You can still talk about it on the thread dedicated to the game, show, comic, or whatever you want to talk about. It's just that posting those kinds of opinions on Unpopular Opinion threads tends to turn into flame bait. We don't like flame bait. We like and encourage civil discussion.
We hope you understand, and thank you.

Boo. I'm against this on principle alone. Can't take the heat, stay out of the fire.

Unfortunately some people can't do that and cause a shitstorm so we're putting a stop to it.

We're not taking away people's right to have a dissenting opinion, we're just telling people to share those opinions on the subject's thread. If anyone wants to argue that Leather Goddesses of Phobos 2 is the Citizen Kane of gaming, they're free to do that in a Leather Goddesses of Phobos thread. If anyone wants to share their counterargument, they're free to do that in a Leather Goddesses of Phobos thread.

I'm still against this, but I can see why you did it.

Well considering what happened in the other thread,I guess it was acceptable to lock down that topic before it gets out of hand.

This kinda sucks. Understandable, but still sucks.
I always thought everyone here could handle a differing opinion...Guess not.

I haven't really seen any "personal attacks" in the Unpopular Opinion threads., but hey. Your call.

It seems that I missed the Memo. Could you all explain why this choice is better than simply punishing those who get out of hand instead of punishing everyone? If someone states an opinion, if you get one of these troublemaker people to find it, they'll start problems whether it's in an unpopular opinion thread or a themed thread. Plus you guys locked every one of them rather than the ones that were just causing maliciousness between users. This seems a lot like the Serious Discussion problem we had, which eventually got resolved with the implementation of leaving it alone until something goes wrong and then fix the problem with dealing solely with the problem maker. So why not this?
I dunno maybe I'm missing something here that was discussed among the rest, but from what I can see, it's a tad unreasonable.

So why not this? We've already temporarily banned people, and we've locked the one for gaming because it was getting out of control. It started to spread to the other ones, so this was really the only thing we could do. And no, it isn't like Serious Discussion. People aren't banned from stating opinions that may be perceived as unpopular, only from dedicating whole threads to them.

I hope this will make people make more threads about the actual shows, games, comic, or movie now. Since Unpopular Opinion threads have been on the rise I have noticed less and less threads like the ones I mentioned earlier.
