Gigguk discusses the possibility of anime becoming mainstream over here and i find it very intresting because i beleive Anime will end up becoming mainstream eventually and be accepted as a mature way of storytelling
To be fair, anime is already mainstream in the way that many people here in the west are fans of it. Over here in Portugal, I have many otaku friends and even those who are not fans of anime still know a bit about it thanks to DBZ and Sailor Moon so they aren't immediately thrown out by the topic. I'd say that the only thing that keeps anime from being "mainstream" is the broadcast media that needs to accept it a bit more, just that

It might take a while but the mainstreaming of anime will come in time. As Gigguk mentioned the biggest obstacle is the "childish" image of anime people have due to the popularity of shonens, the stereotyping of Japan as weird, and the fact that most people don't know anime past the children's shows of the early 2000's. What also makes the mainstreaming slow is that there are several mature anime out there (Fate/Zero, Eden of the East, Monster, Psycho Pass, and Steins;Gate to name a few) but none of them have really caught on outside of the anime fandom, and the shows that are most popular amongst the anime fandom currently are either comedies with moe art styles or tons of fanservice, and shows that have been met with "love it or hate it" reception like Sword Art Online. Though again it's slowly happening since Madoka Magica had it's third movie open with a very successful premiere in Los Angeles, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is popular among many non-anime fans proving that mature shows can be popular. Something like the Monster live action adaptation Gigguk mentioned could also help heighten the status of anime and there's always the possibility that something like Madoka Magica or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will come along and become known among non-anime fans. Personally though, I don't really care if anime is mainstream or not, I just want people to accept it as a mature medium of storytelling and a way for us to learn about another's culture through media.
Doesn't really matter to me. People need to adjust to different cultures though.
Pretty much this, I think it's more important that the mainstream crowd stops viewing anime as "those weird cartoons from Japan" and starts seeing them as a way to introduce one culture into another.

I don't watch anime, and I really don't know anyone who does. The only ones I hear kids talk about are the ones they watched as kids like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z. Ironically, Video Game Pokemon is pretty popular at my school.

With a couple of expectations that is the same where i live
I've yet to find a UK channel which broadcasts anime, and Funimation's website isn't available in the UK, so those are definite barriers.
There was one back in 2007/08 called Anime Central that broadcast anime between 9pm and 6am. I recall getting up ridiculously early just to watch some of the shows. It lasted just under a year. As far as I'm aware, that's the best we ever got.
The US is one thing but I don't see anime becoming mainstream here in the UK in the foreseeable future. Despite our own sizable anime fandom, for the UK in general, anime just kind of came and went.
