I think it's finally time to tackle this oh so sacred list of mine. My Top 10 Favorite Females in Video Games. This was NOT by any means an easy task, but picking out 10 of my favorite females in ALL of video games... it's never easy for anyone.
This list to me isn't just about looks or attitude, these are 10 female characters that I consider to be the most memorable in my time as a gamer. I would like to note that there are no characters from fighting games on this list. That is something I have put to bed in a previous countdown. For now, it's time to exit my comfort zone of arcade sticks, and engage this countdown on a personal level.
"Personal" is the key word here. These are my PERSONAL choices, and some (not all) of these characters have PERSONALLY flipped the script on how I view females in video games. You might be surprised by who shows up. Some of these are certainly not the usual suspects, but I will hold strong in my words and reasoning.
Typical rules apply. Only one character per franchise, and only from games I've played. With that being said... girls, the floor is yours.

NUMBER 10!

Over a year ago, I got hooked on the now competitive gaming juggernaut that is League of Legends. A game with tons of ever changing strategy, and team based triumph and despair. There's no "I" in this kind of game. But the ever growing list of memorable characters would make anyone go "Ay yai yai!"
One character in particular suited my support playstyle perfectly, and I stuck with her to the end of my tenure on the Fields of Justice. From first sight, she.. took my breath away...
And you thought it was just a harmless breeze...
Meet Janna, the Storm's Fury. Don't let her... lack of modesty fool you. If you're on her team, you'll have your eyes on her for more reasons than one. She's one of the most supportive... uh, supports you could ask for.
First of all, Janna's passive, Tailwind, gives everyone on her team a slight boost in movement speed. In later patches, this was changed to being active only towards nearby allies, and just became a global passive. Thanks, Riot.
Janna's Q is Howling Gale, a pretty large tornado that knocks anyone in its path upward. The cool thing about this skill is that you can actually hold the tornado in place for a couple seconds to charge it up for a stronger release, as well as having it travel a longer distance. This works great in support lane as an excellent harassment tool, as it can be sent out from inside the bush hidden from normal sight, and then have it blast out at your enemies. It also works well in aggressive lanes, as it is a nice wave clearing tool.
Her W is Zephyr, a small wind spirit that attacks the target for some decent damage, as well as slow them down for a bit. The only drawback is that her W has a personal speed boost passive attached, so throwing this out to slow someone down will also slow you down in return until her W comes off cooldown. Even so, toss out this sucker to debilitate an escaping enemy in the red, and then your team member takes it from there.
Her E is Eye of the Storm, a shield to pass on to an ally that eats up a certain amount of damage for the 5 seconds it's attached. And also, it gives the person who is shielded an increase in attack damage. A must have for that AD that needs protection, and kills. You can also use it on your turret if you absolutely want to give it a couple more seconds of not being destroyed. And in League of Legends, every second counts.
But then comes her R, Monsoon. First of all, it knocks back everyone near her, sometimes through walls. Second of all, all allies in the area receives an HP heal for as long as Monsoon is up. Needless to say, this can not only save lives, but also end teamfights. Enemies can get seperated, and allies can be rejuvenated after a near-death experience.
And those who bring Janna down to Mid lane are to be worshipped. While Janna can pop like a balloon at a much greater frequency than other AP Mids, her AP gains are quite substantial, so what was already a first aid response in support lane becomes a survival kit in mid. Comboing Q to W to force mid off lane, tornado cleanup for minions, as well as blocking a great deal of ult damage with one E, and making her ADC hit with excessive force, in the right hands, it's hard to keep her down let alone lock her down.
If it sounds like I'm focusing too much on gameplay and not character, well, Janna is a prodigy of wind magic, and it's not hard to see that she's gotten quite creative with her elemental control in the process. So her character comes from her spells, and the originality she manifests from just a small gust of wind. Though if you must have something more modest and defined for her to wear, she also has one of the funniest optional skins in the game with Forecast Janna.
The people at Riot Games have quite a sense of humor to turn an airmaster into a forecaster. Every single cliche weatherlady one-liner is front and center in her dialogue, and it is all hilarious. And it doesn't end at the voiceovers. Now her Q tornado carries debris, her W is a happy thundercloud, and her own monsoon has a... bit too much force behind it for even Janna to handle.
Janna may be one of those video game characters who is on this list for personal preference, but the utility is hard to argue against. Of all the supports available in League, she's the one I usually end up locking in without hesitation.
Trust me, I'm a weatherwoman.
To be continued...
