Well lets see: Comedy Action: (More Comedy, less action)
This or DBZ Abridged Action Comedy: (Vice-Versa) One Piece or DBZ Action:
The actual anime, not the abridged, this is just hilarious.

Cowboy Bebop is really the only acceptable answer if you're a first-timer.
Check out Big O, Baccano and some other stuff down the line.
Definitely check out NGE after you've watched some more anime. And after that, watch FLCL.

Cowboy Bebop : The perfect gateway anime for a newcomer. It's got a lot of things for almost any kind of viewer to enjoy. You like action there's a lot of great fight scenes, if you like story while the show is episodic there's an overarching plot that's interesting, if you like characters all four of the lead characters are very unique from each other and have a lot to offer in terms of personality and backstory, and if you like humor the show mixes in some funny moments within it's action. The show is also an episodic series meaning that every episode is something new and if one episode wasn't your cup of tea maybe you'll find something to enjoy in another one.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion : This was my gateway anime actually. The show is 2 seasons of 25 episodes (total 50) but there's really no filler episodes and the plot manages to stay interesting from beginning to end. The show is always throwing something new at your way and changes things that keep you wanting to watch more. The plot is also relatively easy to follow as a lot of the plot elements are explained very well and most of the plot heavy stuff is dealt with in the beginning. The only flaw I do find is that the show has a bit too much characters and most of them aren't that memorable but the main characters Lelouch and C.C. are fleshed out and interesting enough for you to have at least a few interesting characters to follow.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya : Like Cowboy Bebop there's something for any kind of anime fan to enjoy here. Sure it's a school life comedy but it manages to differentiate itself from the norm. There's more of a focus on the story which while it's not the main focus of the series you can at least feel it's presence and how it relates to the show. The characters are entertaining on their own but there's also the fact that the show explores each one's role and how the SOS Brigade and Haruhi's antics affect each member. But that stuff aside the show is just fun to watch, it balances humor with some well done dramatic moments and like Cowboy Bebop there's a somewhat episodic format so if one episode wasn't your thing you might find something to enjoy in another episode. I'd also highly suggest watching the movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya once you complete the show since it ties together everything in the show.
Ouran Highschool Host Club - Like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya at first glance it seems like a typical high school comedy but it does a lot to differentiate it from the norm. Like Haruhi it follows an episodic format meaning there's something for you to enjoy even if some episodes aren't your cup of tea and there's a good balance of humor and dramatic moments. The selling point here is the characters though. All seven of the Host Club members are all very unique characters with their own distinct personality quirks that make each of them entertaining in their own ways and even well thought out backstories. The show also focuses on the dynamic between the club members making you want to watch each episode to see how each of them continue to grow from their experiences.
Fullmetal Alchemist & Soul Eater - Recommending these both because they have a lot of similarities to each other. Both of them are shonen series with similar episode amounts (51 for the original FMA series and Soul Eater and 64 for FMA: Brotherhood) and are even made by the same studio. Both of these shows have also been the gateway anime for a lot of recent anime fans. The main similarities these shows have is that they contain stylish action scenes, interesting and easy to follow storylines, colorful characters, and a lot of humorous moments mixed in with some more serious moments and the story as a whole. I'd say these are great anime for any starter since these elements make them both good watches for almost anyone and their wide demographic means you'll encounter a lot of people who've watched them.

I'd recommend Dragon Ball Z Kai since it is what got me back into anime and it's also a good way to get into DBZ(aside from The Abridged Series).

I'd recommend Dragon Ball Z Kai since it is what got me back into anime and it's also a good way to get into DBZ(aside from The Abridged Series). But it is longer. I think it is better to watch several shorter anime or movies to know this is something you really like than spend all your time on one show.

Guess so, But at least it isn't as long as the original show due to cutting most of the filler.

If you want to start with plebeian stuff, watch what other people here recommend to you. If you want to build good(and arguably less fun) taste though, and immediately get on with the best things anime has to offer, I recommend going with Cowboy Bebop(English dub too) and several key Ghibli films, like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Grave of the Fireflies. I'd say anime films are in fact true gateways for people completely inexperienced with anime, so when you finish those, add Castle of Cagliostro, AKIRA, and Ghost in the Shell to the watchlist. These are all important films. After that you can get on more with actual TV shows, most of the good stuff which I like to pick from here: fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/196/f/4/essential_anime_by_clownboss-d6dma1h.png Read the descriptions and pick whichever series interests you and watch them at your own leisure. The only other really important shows I can bring up are Studio Gainax's masterpieces Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and the overly long and epic Legend of the Galactic Heroes. However, NGE's depressing subject matter is very unfit for first time anime viewers because of its polarizing nature, and you will either love it or hate it, so hold it until way, way later. It is also not recommended you marathon the series, but it's an anime great everybody needs to see at least once in their lives.

Just a heads up: FLCL is not something I would recommend to newbies, it is way too insane and hard to follow at times because of all the crazy shit happening all the time. If one had never seen anime before and tried to jump right into FLCL, then that person would most likely end up with a bad impression of anime in general since not only this anime is crazy as all hell, there is also a sub-community of the otaku community that loves to reinforce the idea that anime is all about being crazy. Other than that, NGE, Ergo Proxy (Too dull and boring, couldn't even get past the first episode) and Serial Experiments Lain, most anime shows in that link are good picks (Also, glad to see that Vision of Escaflowne is in there, I thought I was the only one who liked that)

I think Barefoot Gen, Jin Roh, Appleseed, and everything that Satoshi Kon has made needs to be mentioned in a list of good anime movies to watch. I think maybe Madoka Magica, Paranoia Agent, and Baccono would be good series to start off with since they are shorter and less of a commitment, but also very good.

If you like action and comedy, one of the best shows to watch is Trigun. The fights aren't as high-budget and polished as something that might be made nowadays, but the creativity in the fights and the scenarios leading up to them make it much more engaging than any other generic adventure show. The story starts off very fun and fresh but slowly starts setting itself more as a conflict of ideals which becomes the main meat of the second half. So all in all it's got interesting action and wacky comedy but still has more to it that makes it worth coming back to. This. Also, Cowboy Bebop. And FMA, but you're already watching that.

Basically I really wanna get into anime but I want ideas of good ones to start watching. At the moment I'm watching FMA and have started Sword Art Online if that helps, but I am someone who can watch pretty much ANYTHING so yeah haha... ANYTHING? Because I can list just about anything. And I MEAN IT.
