The Fire Emblem franchise was always a franchies I was reluctant to try out, from the difficulty to the mechanics, to the fact that I wasn't as much of a RPG nut as I am now. But know that I have more experience with RPG's like Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and especially Persona, I decided earlier this year to pick up the most recent instalment in the franchise; that being Awakening. I wasn't expecting much going in, but I'm happy to say that this is not only one of the best RPG's on the 3DS, but probably on of the best games on the system, as well.
Presentation (Graphics, Cutscenes, Music)
As most 3DS games go, the presentation on this game is down right amazing.
As the games shows character in both actions and cutscenes, the models are actually well done. While the character models can look a little muggy at points, they all have distinct body types, all are well detailed, and not many of the characters look similar in the slightest.
Some cutscenes, however, play though cinematic cutscenes with well done voice acting and a different style that captures the in-game models and areas well.
The battles, are also well done. The models moves as they should, there were little to no glitches with them, and the attacks for magic and some special skills are purely breathtaking *cough Leviety cough*. The textures can be a bit blurry at times, but overall, I have no real problems with the graphics.
As for music, well, what can I say? Rei Kondoh, Hiroki Morishita, and long-time series composer, Yuka Tsujiyoko, had a lot of great ideas when it came to the music. From "Divine Decree", to the main theme, and my personal favorite, "Don't You Dare Mock Her Name!" , The soundtrack pretty much sums up the games presentation; Well Done.
Score: 4.75 / 5
Story
If you ever played an RPG before, you probably have the basic idea. It centers around the main hero Chrom, A character of your design (most call them MyUnit), and a group known as the Shepherds, a rag tag team of people working under the Yesille Guard.
Chrom, his sister Lissa, and there Butler of sorts, Frederick, finds MyUnit In the middle of a field with no memory of what happen before waking up. (Gesse, never heard that before) Well, at least they're not a mute.
Amazingly, though, MyUnit not only has great battling capabilities, but a strategic genius! Chrom offers to help MyUnit find there memory back and also offers him to be the new technician of the Shepherds.
And, that's all I'm gonna say. I'm sorry, but the story is just too good to spoil. There's twists, there's turns, and an emotional story if you pay attention enough. Yeah, its not a bad story, but if you happen to daze out, you'll find yourself lost pretty easily. There are some things that don't go explained, and some of the plot points can be kinda hard to fallow, but still, its an excellent story with so many compelling moments that its amazing.
Score: 4 / 5
Gameplay
Holy crap, there's a lot to do in this game. The gameplay, like all Fire Emblem Games, is centers in an Tactical RPG format. That means that you take your turn by moving units, healing with magic or potions, trading items between units, or attacking enemy units. Enemy (in red) and Allies (in green) turns play simular, just with AI units. However, like all Fire Emblem games, if a unit dies, they're gone for good unless you start the chapter over again.
However, since Nintendo figured that people from Casual markets are getting 3DS's, they made multiple difficulty settings, and even the ability to turn the perma-death off. This makes this a good opener into the franchies, for pretty much anyone who's curious in the franchise.
That's not saying the game's easy, ooohhh no. In fact, Lunatic mode was probably one of the hardest, and yet most satisfying modes to beat, almost Dark Souls level of hard but satisfying. Yet while the game is hard, the game respects your skills. It didn't try to screw you over 24/7, and it gives you those "Aw, If I moved my unit to take out that minion instead of that one, he would be still alive." moments all the time, and only few times did it ever sell like Tarous-crap.
The class system in this game had a huge reboot in this game. If one of your characters (I believe there's over 60, it believe) is Level 10 or above or a advanced class, you can change your class using a Master seal (Lvl 10 basic to advanced) or a Secondary Seal (Lvl 10 basic or Advanced to another basic) The class system is also made it so that there's no level cap. And with over 50 classes in the game, all of them having there own abilities, stats, and preferences, it increases the replay value greatly.
There is more I could talk about, from the Duel system, to the Support System, to the children carry-over system, its a lot to take in. I would be typing all week if I went into detail into each and every mechanic, but if your a fan of RPG's, Or looking for a good game with in-depth play, look no further than here.
Score 4.75 / 5
Final Verdict
This is the definitive of what a RPG should be. It's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, from the fact that the difficulty's too steep with perma-death, some may or may not like the Artstyle, and some may not like RPG's or the 3DS in general.
But if your an RPG fan with a 3DS, willing to deal with firm but fair difficulty, and a love for a good story with likeable characters, this a title that you can't miss out on.
Final Score: 4.5 / 5
Title: Must Buy!
