Metroid Prime Trilogy Comparison:
The Metroid Prime Trilogy. Often considered to be one of the greatest trilogies of games ever made. Retro Studios pulled a miracle bringing Metroid into the 3rd dimension, and it worked perfectly. However, the question still remains, which one of them is the best? Let’s find out.
Category 1. Storyline
This was hard to give out. Each game has completely different storylines, and are incredibly hard to choose from. If I have to pick, I’d say Prime 1 had the best story from the amazing isolation feeling you get from it. Corruption comes in second for have memorable moments and the fact that you save the GALAXY, but it loses points for having you kill your own comrades. And while Prime 2 had an interesting Light World –Dark World mechanic, we’ve already seen that.
Prime: 3
Echoes: 1
Corruption: 2
Category 2. Level Design
This was pretty easy. Echoes used the light/dark implementation for some really unique puzzle solving. Prime had some interesting puzzles as well, but was limited to the items you acquired. Corruption almost had 2nd place, if it weren’t for the fact that most of the puzzles were actually pretty easy.
Prime: 5
Echoes: 4
Corruption: 3
Category 3. Bosses
Each game has its fair share of memorable bosses, but I ultimately had to decide from the best of each game. Those would have to be Meta Ridley, Quadraxis, and Rundas. Rundas was cool as a character, but was way too easy as a boss. Quadraxis was epic to fight, but I’m going to have to give it to Meta Ridley, mainly because of the satisfaction you get from destroying Samus’ eternal nemesis.
Prime: 8
Echoes: 6
Corruption: 4
Category 4. Music
This was not easy to give out points for. All of these games have soundtracks that perfectly capture the mood of the games. Though if I had to pick I’d go with Corruption’s soundtrack, mainly for how well its used in causing fear. Prime comes in second because It has a great soundtrack, but not as good as Corruption. And Echoes… left something to be desired.
Prime: 10
Echoes: 7
Corruption: 7
Category 5. Characters
Corruption, without a doubt. The bounty hunters in corruption surprisingly have good characters and were really memorable. That and the fact that Echoes had the Luminoth, and Prime had… Samus.
Prime: 11
Echoes: 9
Corruption: 10
Category 6. Items
Ok, to put it bluntly, the weapons in these 3 games are near identical in terms of purpose, but completely different in terms of properties. If I have to choose, I’d say that Prime had the most diversity, from Plasma beam, to Ice Beam to Wave beam. Corruption takes 2nd for the interesting uses for Hyper mode, and for giving Samus more physical abilities, like finally learning how to CLIMB A F*CKING LEDGE. Echoes gets last because, while its weapons and powers are cool, they all don’t stray from the whole Light vs. Dark mechanic.
Prime: 14
Echoes: 10
Corruption: 12
Category 7. Lasting Value
This… Was hard to decide. In terms of lasting, I’d say Echoes is the best, because you single-handedly save one world, and completely destroy another, as well as saving the alien Lumioth. Corruption gets second because you save the whole galaxy, but the ending just seemed to have a bit of a letdown in terms of its ending. Sadly, Prime was the weakest in lasting value, because the atmosphere keeps you engrossed in the game, that you actually feel somewhat disappointed when the game is finally over.
Prime: 15
Echoes: 14
Corruption: 14
Tie-breaker: Originality
Sorry Echoes, but Light-World Dark-World has been done several times before. Corruption, on the other hand, actually used the whole Phazon Corruption really well, and gave use more depth on the plot dev-I mean, radioactive substance.
Final Score:
Prime: 15
Echoes: 14
Corruption: 14.5
Conclusion: In the end, Prime is easily the best in the trilogy for its Fantastic atmosphere, unique power-ups, and awesome bosses. Corruption comes close with its characters, music, and Echoes takes last, but still has great level design, and good lasting value. Until next time, Ice Out.
