I have a serious question...
Is he alive or dead?
Because I was just thinking about that... and my mind exploded.

Hmm, I'd say he's in a hard to define spot between life and death (a bit closer to the former than to the latter) just like Dracula himself. Dracula never actually died when he became a vampire, he "merely" got cursed. Alucard himself was apparently born (healthy and alive) to a living mother and the already vague Dracula. Both of them don't age, and in Dracula's case he just vanishes when he's defeated, reincarnating again in a while.
And if we'd look purely at biology, both of them seem to have a fully functional body without any signs of decay. They can move, they can talk (in varying degrees of hamminess), and they need sustenance.
Therefore, I'd say they're both alive.

I considered that... he gave up humanity with the Crimson Stone, but didn't "die". So it's hard to tell whether he counts as undead or not. Then there's Alucard. He's alive, clearly, but is he amongst the living? If Drac counts as alive then that's clearly a yes. If not then he's totally in limbo. Hah.
Then again if Drac wasn't alive then I'm sure he'd probably be sterile, soooooooooooooooooooo........

Hmm, when I think about it, I'd say there's three states of "life" between life and death. From alive to dead, you have: - The immortals, who appear as very much alive, and often require some of the same (or similar) necessities, but don't age and don't necessarily "die" when killed;
- The intelligent undead, whose body is decaying, but their mind is till intact, and:
- The mindless undead. Think zombies and such, who are incapable of any thought other than "Braaaaaaaaaains!".
Obviously, both Dracula and Alucard would fit in the immortal category. And I'd say this scale would be pretty clear and definitive, until you start taking Death/the Grim Reaper into consideration. Where does he fit in? He's a skeleton in a robe, but he isn't decaying, he just always looked that way. Aaaargh! Video game science! My worst timesinky nemesis!

I see this degrading from whether Alucard is alive or not to the states of life. Which is cool with me.
Death is technically... well, the angel of the dead. He's got an undead appearance but if you want to get really technical, he's a divine being. State of life though....... I think that's really a question of "What do you consider angels?" I'd say alive, but then again... Death has a dead appearance. Considering he's the angel of death and deals with death instead of life, I'd jump out on a limb and say that it's safe to say he's dead. But..... then again Death could very easily be neither.... Well wait, I don't think alucard could have inherited full immortality, he was born to a mortal mother and he can be poisoned and die, so he's half immortal, I think eternal would be a better way to define it.

Immortal in this case means you can't die by natural causes. Neither Dracula or Alucard can die from old age, disease, etc. But a old fashioned sword to the face would kill them (or at least Alucard. It'd have to be a holy sword for Drac.) That's more or less what we meant by immortal.
