The Hum album was a pretty good listen, although it could never really grab my attention as it generally felt like a pretty canon alt rock album. On its best moments it kinda reminds me of Siamese Dream-era Smashing Pumpkins (Stars) or even Nirvana (The Pod), but it fails to truly impress me. Also, things like The Very Old Man are kinda bad and unnecessary. Still a neat album though.

You'd Prefer An Astronaut is full of big sounding songs with big sounding riffs and bored sounding vocals. Not that this is a bad thing, it is an alt-rock staple and gives the album a very 90s feel, sounding a lot like Smashing Pumpkins at points as Sander stated. When the first track came on I was not sure how sold I would be as the mixing didn't seem to be handled too well; I couldn't decide if the singing was too high up in the mix or too low down. Last song felt slightly boring as well but otherwise not a whole lot to complain about. I Hate It Too was probably my favourite track but it will require relistens. The album took quite a slow approach to pacing which paid off for the loud sounding songs, which was all of them. I would call for more dynamic variation but we got that in the closer and I didn't like it so I'll shut up now.

It's my turn I reckon sooo here's something I've been hyping up recently: Coil - The Ape of NaplesBy the time this album was released, Coil had been in the business for about 20 years, had been lauded for being one of the pioneers in industrial music, one half of the two core members had died before the release of this album by falling off his balcony (he was an alcohol addict, it's sad) and then this record happened. A sprawling record full of gloomy, dreary ambient sounds, drunken ramblings about death, hate and sadomasochism, generally batshit insane stuff happening all over the place, and all of it is glorious. From the glorious opener "Fire of the Mind", where John Balance calls angels mathematical and reduces men to animals, to the Tom Waits-esque highlight "Tattooed Man", to whatever the hell is going on in "It's In My Blood", to the cold, creepy Heaven's Blade, to the beautiful, soaring closer "Going Up", this album is a fuckin rollercoaster ride. Every track is solid gold, I'm sure this album isn't for everyone, but listen to this with an open mind and you might just end up loving it.

The album cover causes me eternal mirth. It's quite the picture of glee, isn't it?

X17's album was solid, while I do feel it was nothing spectacular I have nothing really worth complaining amount it. The guitar work here was the highlight of the album for sure which was the intended feeling, vocal work was average as was pretty much everything else. Definetly has a Smashing Pumpkins vibe to it.....yeah I got nothing else.

The Ape of Naples was truly an interesting album. I had heard the name Coil chucked about occasionally but had very little knowledge of the style of music that they did. This was an intriguing introduction where it feels hard to make a final judgement initially. I am not going to beat about the bush, there were some really boring points on this album (see: half of it) but the odd pacing and high points stop me from passing it off as an album I dislike. Whilst the first two songs near enough put me to sleep, Tatooed Man really began to pique my interest and as I listened the soundscape felt like it was creeping in on me in quite a frightening manner. It is an apocalyptic album to be sure but doesn't take the silly power metal approach and instead goes at this drudging, gloomy pace which places the listener in the highest level of discomfort. This is not a bad thing but I might have picked the wrong time to listen as I could only truly get behind about half of the album. For every Heaven's Blade (good) there was a The Last Amethyst Deceiver (bad) so whilst I wasn't as impressed as I might have been, I will definitely listen again at at least one point in my life because one listen simply does not feel fair.

Yeah I absolutely adored this album. I've heard of Coil recently as an EP of Broken and TDS era NIN songs remixed by them was recently posthumously released but other then that I knew nothing about these guys and was incredibly surprised by what I got. The soundscapes they create are some of the most intersting I've heard in a-while, I honestly can't really describe it as this is one of those albums that you really need to listen to a couple times to let everything in it really sink in, but there was never a moment here where I wasn't bored. It was damn frightning at times and listening to this with headphones late at night probably wasn't the best idea in the world but meh, was worth it and really added to the experience. It's a real shame about both guys passing away, especially as talented as they were, but they've left behind some incredible stuff to listen to, gonna check out the rest of these guys stuff, this was great. Strong 8/10

Sorry this is late, I've been busy playing Dark Souls II and really haven't had the chance to sit down and listen to your album Magus. Well, till today anyway. So, for starters I'm gonna say that this isn't like anything I've ever heard before, ever. My initial reaction was that of shock and confusion, though that disappeared as the album went on. What The Ape of Naples does is create this sort of atmospheric world that pulls you in to listen to the strange and maybe even out-worldly sounds. Most of the songs were really well put together and amazing to listen too. But the ones that I felt like weren't such as It's in My Blood and I Don't Get it just sounded a little too weird and sort of pushed the feeling of strange onto you. Solid overall, 8/10

Myth Takes is a pretty neat album with a dance-punk vibe. It never really grabbed me until Bend Over Beethoven, which had this really sexy instrumental in the middle. I generally don't have much to say on this album other than that I liked it but never was tooamazed by it, I'd say a strong 6 to a light 7 would be a good score for now, I'll listen to it again sometime though.

I think that Myth Takes is 2dope and one of the most fun albums that I know. Right from the creepy first song, the well layered instrumentation grabs me and the underlying vocals on Nic Offer play very much to the songs benefit. I dig dance punk and this is basically what that subgenre is all about. Imma give the drummer a main shoutout for keeping everything working during the instrumental sections (and on All My Heroes are Zeroes the drumming is next level). Basically, I love the sound they have which is fairly consistent across albums, though if Sander prefers the extended instrumentals he will prefer their previous album, Louden Up Now. My favourite songs are Myth Takes, Must Be the Moon, and Bend Over Beethoven.

I have to side with Magus on Myth Takes, I enjoyed the album but I was never really grabbed by it with the exception of the 1-2-3 combo of Heart of Hearts, Sweet Life, and Yadnus (Bend over Beethoven was pretty good too though). I had fun with it and it's something I'd probably revisit in a little while. Solid 6/10 And for my choice De-Loused in The Comatorium (The Mars Volta)If I were to die and leave one album behind as something that best summed up my musical taste, it would be this. I've only really started digging this album the past month and it's in my top 10, possibly top 5 of all time.

Now there's a Mars Volta album!
My thoughts on Myth Takes are slightly different from the rest of you guys. I will agree with Ammy that it is a really fun album. Practically bouncing around really. Myth Takes didn't really grab my attention until the halfway point. For whatever reason, I kept getting this 50s and 60s image in my head of someone driving around while listening through Myth Takes. The drum work was what stood out for me. Favourite song was Yandus, though Bend Over Beethoven is up there. A solid 7 but a light 8.
1. !!! - Myth Takes

Just finished listening De-Loused in the Comatorium, and I remembered why it's not a particular favourite of mine by The Mars Volta. Now, don't get me wrong, I like it still, I really do. I just think it's not their best work. Simply put, I found it to be all over the place really. The two short songs, Son et Lumiere and Tira Me las Aranas are fantastic little songs that help break up the traditional long TVM songs. Inertiatic ESP and Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt are what I'd consider the best songs on the album as they essentially capture what The Mars Volta is and what they produce. Besides those, I found the rest of the album kind of weak and forgettable. Anyway, the drum work is top notch for most of the album with their vocals being up their as well. Despite not really liking it as much as I thought I would, I'd give it a strong 6 and a light 7. Favourite song was Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt. 1. !!! - Myth Takes 2. The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium As for my album, it's a bit older. Iron Butterfly - Heavy
