Note: We are still accepting new characters. Join here: thecaveofinsanity.proboards.com/thread/1659/another-protagonist-rpThe year is 2300. Nobody knows where the plague came from. It's some sort of nano-technology of highly unusual design. 150 years ago, it began to turn the masses into undead hordes. Some places fell almost immediately. Some took over a century to fall. This is Icarus City, Texas. It fell just 2 years ago. It's now a rusting jungle of twisted steel and concrete. Many people have turned to looting and crime in order to get what they want. It's a white line nightmare. However, some manage to eek out a semi-honest living in encampments in the city. Lewis was inspecting the fence. A section of the wooden fence had finally given way. Previously, it had kept the shamblers out, but today one of the zombies had managed to bust it down. He sighed. Time management was very important now a days. He found that there simply wasn't enough time to get food, get water, repair reinforcements and find ammo. And if he didn't do all of those things, he'd be royally screwed. Still, he had to stay here. There was still food and water here, and he simply did not have the ability to carry it all with him. He needed a home base. Besides, you do not want to be outdoors at night.

Meanwhile, about 5 blocks away...
Dr. Vermillius was starting to feel the pressure. He wasnt sure how much longer he could hold out. Earlier he had punched in the figures for the water and food he had remaining into his PDA, which was strong enough to survive even a small house falling on top of it. Acording to it, he could last about another week inside the old apartment he had set up for himself. Longer if he started drinking his own urine.
Vermillius wasn't about to step that boundary. If he had to do that, it wouold be a warning that he was in a seriously dangerous situation.
So nothing new there then.
It would have to either be later today, or early tomorrow then. The second appealed to him- The undead functioned less effectively in sunlight, and leaving early meant he would have a longer period to survive in. If the gangs didnt get him first. If the gangs hadnt learned that taking on a scientist who understands the ins and outs of a high energy experimental prototype cannon better than even their best shot was a fairly dumb idea.
Tomorrow it was.

By the time that Lewis had gathered all he needed to fix the fence, it was already getting late. He still needed water. He considered searching a nearby apartment building, but from what he's heard the place was already picked clean. He sighed and decided he'd just have to use his rations.
Raiders were only vaguely aware of the presence of a scientist holed up in the apartments. While they certainly 'had' the resources to mug or kill him, he was just one guy who probably didn't have anything good on him in the first place. Raiders had learned by now that organized raids were best directed towards encampments of people. Stationary groups of people were the ones who tended to survive the best, which means that they also tended to have nice things.
At night, the zombies /did/ come out, but they were not very active. If the scientist had his door locked tonight, he probably would have stayed safe. However, he would surely find it hard to sleep, what with a few zombies knocking hard on his door. However, more of them begin to break into other apartment rooms. This was bad. Very bad. These zombies might not go away when the sun rises....

When the sun eventually did rise, vermillius prepared himself. Using his pda, he calculated the precise area at which the majority of the Undead heads would be. He set his cannon to Laser, and fired multiple shots, taking out the entirety of the undead hordes outdside with minimal effort, and sound (should energy weapons make sound?)
Making a break for it to the outside, he started cautiously making his way towards an area he had noted on his travels.... An old, dilapidated church....

((In real life, a prototype energy weapon makes less sound than a silenced handgun, so we'll go with 'no'))
The undead, upon getting fired upon, quickly keel over. They are not dead, however. As Vermillius leaves, they get back up and start to cahse after him...until they see the sun. They stop, and eventually turn around.
Lewis took inventory of what he had.
5 First aid kits. About 90 Food Units (enough for one person to have 3 square meals a day for about a week) A single water cooler tank filled with water. 25 units of electricity stored in batteries which he never used. One unit was equal to a single shot of an energy weapon. And a large supply of Ammo.
He was getting worried that one of these days, a person would try to steal his stuff when he was out scavenging. He had a white board on the front that notified people that this building was currently in use as of today's date. He regularly changed it. However, this was a very weak deterrent.
That's when Lewis saw a man walking out the door. He put his hand on his holster and walked towards the gate. That's when he had an idea. He had wonderful, awful idea. If he can't safely scavenge things, he'll have THIS bloke do it for him!
He shouts "Hey! You! I'm not a raider!" He stands on a stool so that he can be seen. He says "I'd like to make you a deal. If you can find me some food, water, and conventional ammunition, I'd reward you. What I really need is a sentry turret to keep this place guarded when I'm not hear. In return, I can give you...something. Do you need any, like, Batteries? Or water? Shelter?"

"Shelter sounds good.....I didnt know the place was taken." Vermillius quickly takes in the surroundings, noticing the broken radio "Let me guess, that radio's busted....Im pretty sure i can fix it. Ok, ill do what i can. Two heads are better than one."

Lewis says "Yeah, that's a broken radio. It's not the kind for communication, however. When the music stopped playing I got rid of it. Still...I be you could rework it into type of communicator. I don't know enough about radios to figure that sort of thing out. Now...about that sentry turret...I think I found one near the computer parts store. Would you go get it?"

In truth, the zombie shouldn't have come out in the day time. It's very rare. Maybe if got lost on the way to find shelter.
Lewis says "Don't worry. It's day time. You don't need to worry about the undead unless you go into a really dark building. What you do need to worry about is wild animals and raiders."
He hears his comment about not having a charge. He nods and says "Tell you what, you stay here a moment..." He comes out with a few cables and a large battery. He says "Let me charge your laser. I don't want you getting mugged..."

"Thanks for the help, i guess ill be going soon."
(I want to say that i can use some of my pdas charge to power the thing (It would be really weak, sort of a no other choice thing), but would this work?)

((Well, I imagine the PDA would use almost no power at all, and the laser would run it dry very rapidly @supersoniclucario You need to use quotes around what your character is actually saying))
Recharging the laser cost him 10 units of electricity, giving the Scientist 10 shots.
Lewis has a seat on the patio. He thinks about the deal. He decides that if this guy's successful, and he continues to be useful, he'll let him stay.
It takes about half an hour for him to actually get there. When he does, he'll find a few raiders have set up camp there. There's two pillagers with blunt weapons and a wooden shield on the ground near them, looking at the sentry turret. One of them says "Well, how do we get the damn thing working?"
The other says "Hell if I know. I say we wait until one of our techies get here. He'll know what to do."
Vermillius has a few options. One is that he could try to hack the turret remotely, which would cause it to activate and attack the raiders. Problem is, once he starts to hack it, they'll know someone's there. It also runs the risk of them destroying the turret. Another option might be to simply go in shooting, and hopefully be able to get out of there before they counter attack. And possibly other options.

(Quick question: Are they paying much attention to the shield?)
