Well it definitely seems to depend on the viewers' tastes. I've heard arguments for why some people dislike the show and had valid points on the matter, while I personally, and many others, adore the show for other valid points supporting their opinions. It's definietly a middle of the line thing I'd think, kinda like how people either love or hate games like Skyward Sword, though I think more people tend to lead to the "good" than the "bad" with AoT.
Personally, this is probably my favorite anime. I adore the action and the lore behind it, I like all of the characters (especially Levi because he's a total bad@$$), I like the themes of humanity and of hope, I like the art style and animation, I like the music, and in general I just love the show. Still, though, others will dislike it for their own reasons and that's totally fine. I'm leaning towards the "good" myself, though.

I've only watched the anime and I think it's pretty good but not the amazing series some people make it out to be. Maybe the manga is better and maybe I'll read it at some point but I don't know.
For a start the anime's pacing is awful and it's a little too action oriented. After the initial introduction of the main cast and the opening story arc, the majority of the series is action scenes (really well done action scenes but still). A lot of the characters are not really all that developed during the anime not helped by the fact that the majority of the secondary cast tend to get killed off rather quickly after being introduced. It says a lot that my favourite character in the anime was Jean, who was initially introduced as the jerkass loudmouth but really gets the most interesting character development during the first major story arc.
Also while the majority of the main cast are likable (I went into this expecting to hate Mikasa and was pleasantly surprised). Once the last story arc of the anime started I found myself increasingly disliking Eren. He's whiny, slightly self-absorbed and he's just not that interesting a character. Of course since he's the main protagonist he gets the most focus, which just made how much he annoyed me all the more prominent.
That said I did watch the whole series and I enjoyed it. Like I said before the action scenes are really good and aside from my problems with Eren I really like the characters and the story. Really it's good but not great.

Well, I enjoyed watching the anime on Netflix and read a bit of the manga and I really enjoy it. Mainly because it feels a bit more different than the usual types I see in anime these days and Im also curious on what happens next in the story since it is a story that's prone to shocking moments and spoilers which is why I wanna keep reading the manga. BTW guys, I hope you people you know how to use spoiler tags because I havent even read the other posts on here im so scared of spoilers to this series.

So far the comments have been mainly about the anime and have been pretty spoiler free (I made sure to word my post pretty carefully to avoid major spoilers) so I wouldn't worry too much. I haven't seen a post about the series on any other thread that didn't use spoiler tags either.

Personally, my main reason for liking it is the music and animnation, because the characters are a bit lacking and even one-dimensional at times. Yeah you have character development, but it's sort of as problem when side characters get much more than the main. I am caught up to the manga minus this month's chapter, and my opinion still stands there too. Some of the plot twists felt really rushed and forced, and I just don't get the same enjoyment when outr main character is simply an overpowered anger character that seems to be able to do anything. Though as a shonen it's not as bad as others I've seen.

Mikasa is the ultimate invulnerable badass of the universe. Of course it's good.

Well, I like it. The action scenes are great, there are some moments that I get emotional with, the music's awesome, it's plot is rather interesting, and it does not have fanservice, which I give massive respects to.

It's overrated. The concept is pretty good, but the characters are less than stellar. Many of them are just exaggerated cliched tropes we have seen before, accentuated to the point of causing a headache to pretend they're something else. Seriously, Mikasa Ackerman is THE example of a boring, overglorified Mary Sue.

I haven't watched it myself but like any popular show since a lot of people are watching it that means people with different tastes watching it and thus leads to split opinions, in which I can see both sides on. The people who enjoyed this show for the most part either enjoyed it for the action scenes meaning they enjoy anime for the action, enjoyed the setting and the messages it tries to get across meaning those viewers enjoy analyzing the psychological aspects of an anime, or enjoyed the feeling of intensity the show creates meaning they enjoy anime for atmosphere and being kept on the edge of their seat. On the other hand what I noticed from people who didn't like it are complaints that the characters die off too quickly which means those types of viewers enjoy anime for growing attached to the characters, or found the action to be the only interesting thing about the show meaning they enjoy substance over style. It also all depends on how you look at a show. For some even if they only found the action to be the best part of the show for example might be easy on it and say they enjoyed it for the well done action scenes, or if they have a harsher outlook on criticizing media might say that it needed more than action to truly be enjoyable. I myself haven't watched the show so as of now I have no opinion so I can't say if I thought it was good or bad, but as someone who knows many types of anime fans just from what I know about this show I can see why some enjoy it and some don't like it.

Mikasa is a Mary Sue. And not a funny or cool one like Deadpool or something of the sort. And Mary Sues and Gary Stus' are the worse. Oh, CLEARLY they're the worst thing in the universe. I mean, they're so HORRIBLE that there's not even one set definition for them! Which means you could technically label any bad character (or any character period) a Mary Sue and get away with it! Yeah, sorry, no, that doesn't work. You can't just apply a vague derogatory term with meaning that's debatable at best and write off a whole character/story without any other explanation.
